-vision
-follow through
-passion
-etc.
The key trait for leaders in “hot moments” is gentleness. Gentleness is not softness. It is not weakness. It is the in the scripture, “power under control.” Gentleness is the picture of a horse that is broken; great power and strength, but now guided and submitted for a mission that matters.
A leader’s gentleness does not remove responsibility. It is not a way of avoiding hot conversations. It is the leader able to separate passionate feelings and release “fuel” (emotion) at the appropriate rate to get the message across. Gentleness in hot moments could be beginning a challenging conversation with open ended questions, and then asking follow up questions. Meekness is not weakness, but clearly the scripture teaches that the key leadership trait in hot moments is gentleness. II Timothy 2:25-26 says, “Those who oppose him he must gently instruct in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape the trap of the devil…”
Leading with gentleness is about more than just being right. It is about doing right in ways that leads others to open hearted opportunities. Gentleness! Who would have guessed??
