Currency of Leadership: Trust

The currency of leadership is TRUST.  It is not position.  As one leader boldly declared to another, when we have to state that we are the leader, we are not!  Trust is the power of a leader, not position and not personality.  Personality can inspire trust, but the root of trust is character, not charisma.  When the people trust the leader, they will follow heart and soul.  When trust is lost, resistance will be filling the air.

Trust is earned.  It is earned by the leader being worthy of trust, being consistent, and choosing others at their own cost.  Trust is a currency that once lost, can be very challenging to regain.

If ever those we lead perceive that we are first choosing ourselves, trust is lost.

That is precisely the reason the soul of the leader is so essential.  When the inner world of the leader is insecure (and cannot take “hot” moments of challenge in healthy manners), when the soul of the leader is driven by the need to be noticed, to be important, to “center stage,” trust will eventually be lost.  The leadership currency is trust; and the key factor in developing trust… is sacrifice.  When leaders sacrifice for the mission and for those they lead, trust will run high.
